5,000 companies manage their accounts using iPhones

November 24, 2010

Launched in October, the world's first complete accounting system for the iPhone has been downloaded by 5,000 small and medium businesses in less than a month.

Primary users include consultants on the move and small business owners who benefit from the ability to create quotes and send invoices while they are with their customers. The app has been created by the Danish company e-conomic which expects more than 10,000 companies to be using the app by the spring of 2011.

Small and medium businesses benefit greatly from having their accounting system with them and being able to access key figures using their mobile phones around the clock. They can stay in control while they are on the move which is essential for their business. That is the conclusion drawn by e-conomic following the runaway success of their iPhone app.

PinPointers, a consulting business that advises companies, local authorities and government bodies on strategic development, is one of the 5,000 companies using the iPhone accounting integration.

Consultants in control while on the move

- We spend a lot of time with our customers and we are away from our office almost the entire day. By being able to access the accounting system from my iPhone, I can browse customer data prior to my visits, send invoices etc. That way, I'm always updated on the current status with our customers, says PinPointers owner Michael N. Wilkens.

PinPointers has used the e-conomic online accounting system for the past four years. Michael N. Wilkens primarily uses the system to send invoices, create reports and record time and mileage. The bookkeeper and accountant, who also have access to the system, take care of everything else. The Software-as-a-Service (Saas) model fits perfectly with their business strategy.

- We have a clear strategy to outsource all IT-related tasks and to keep them as flexible and cost-efficient as possible. As a result, we essentially only own our laptops and smartphones, says Michael N. Wilkens.

Growth potential in accounting using smartphones

Today, around 30,000 customers are using the e-conomic accounting system, and the creation of a smartphone app has been a frequent request from customers. According to e-conomic CEO Torben Frigaard Rasmussen, e-conomic is continually working to further develop the app and will launch an app in 2011 that will allow all smartphones, regardless of operating system, to integrate with e-conomic.

- The massive success of the iPhone app confirms our view that a smartphone integration with e-conomic carries a great potential. So we will continue our work on the app and expect to have more than 10,000 smartphone users by the spring of 2011, says Torben Frigaard Rasmussen.

Apps are developed in cooperation with Aarhus-based company Onlimited.
